Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of school is Wiser Academy?
Wiser Academy is an online, LDS faith-based school offering a serious and structured education for students ages 5–18, as well as adults who are interested in continuing their education.
Wiser Academy does not use age-based grade levels in the traditional way. Instead, students work through courses according to readiness, ability, family goals, and academic planning. This allows younger students, older students, and adult learners to study at a level that fits their needs.
Is Wiser Academy a homeschool program or a private school?
Students in certain plans may use Wiser Academy as a curriculum and learning platform while parents remain responsible for their student’s education records and homeschool compliance. Students in other plans may be officially enrolled in Wiser Academy and become eligible for school-supported records, transcripts, and diploma pathways.
Because education laws vary by state and country, parents are responsible for understanding and following the requirements where they live.
Is Wiser Academy accredited?
Our goal is to build a rigorous academic program with strong records, clear course requirements, meaningful assessments, transcript support, and a diploma pathway that reflects high educational standards.
Is Wiser Academy a religious school?
We believe education should strengthen the mind, character, and soul. Our courses are built around serious learning, moral responsibility, truth-seeking, and respect for God’s purposes.
At the same time, Wiser Academy welcomes students of any faith. Families do not need to be members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to enroll, but they should understand that the school’s worldview, values, and educational philosophy are shaped by LDS faith and doctrine.
Is Wiser Academy a conservative school?
We believe principles such as free markets, limited government, personal responsibility, traditional values and institutions, duty, individual liberty, moral discipline, and respect for God are foundational for a healthy society.
However, Wiser Academy does not believe students should be sheltered from opposing viewpoints. Students should learn the major arguments on different sides of important questions so they can understand, evaluate, and respond thoughtfully. Our goal is not to produce students who merely repeat slogans, but students who can reason carefully, defend truth, and understand why ideas matter.
Wiser Academy teaches from a conservative and LDS faith-based perspective while still helping students understand competing arguments and worldviews.
Are parents required to be involved?
Wiser Academy is designed to support parents, not replace them. Parents should help students stay on schedule, monitor progress, encourage consistent study habits, communicate with the school when needed, and make sure their student is taking school seriously.
For younger students especially, parent involvement is essential. Older students may be able to work more independently, but parents should still remain actively aware of their progress.
Can students work at their own pace?
Wiser Academy is designed to be flexible, but students should follow a plan created by themselves, their parents, and/or Wiser Academy staff. The goal is to give families flexibility without sacrificing structure, consistency, or academic seriousness.
Students may move more quickly through material they understand well and take more time with difficult subjects, but they should still maintain steady progress.
How much time should students spend on school each day?
At minimum, students should spend as much time studying and working through their courses as students in a normal public or private school setting. Wiser Academy is not designed to be a shortcut around serious schooling. It is designed to give students a strong education from home.
Younger students may need shorter, more guided study periods, while older students should expect a more substantial daily academic schedule.
How are students graded?
Wiser Academy emphasizes mastery and understanding. Students are not merely expected to complete assignments; they are expected to show that they understand the material.
In many courses, students should aim for at least an 80% passing standard. This reflects the academy’s desire for students to learn carefully and not simply move through lessons without real comprehension.
Are assessments multiple choice or written?
Quizzes help test comprehension, memory, and careful attention to the course material. Written assignments require students to explain ideas clearly, reason through questions, apply what they have learned, and develop stronger communication skills.
The goal is not merely to test whether students can recognize the right answer, but whether they can understand and explain what they are learning.
Does Wiser Academy provide transcripts?
Students in diploma-eligible plans may receive transcript support and academic record keeping through Wiser Academy. Families using Wiser Academy independently remain responsible for maintaining their own records and transcripts.
Can students transfer credits from another school?
Wiser Academy may consider previous coursework when helping a student build an academic plan. Transfer credit decisions depend on the course, documentation, academic quality, grade level, and whether the course fits Wiser Academy’s graduation requirements.
Can students enroll part-time?
Part-time students may still be eligible for a Wiser Academy diploma if they complete all necessary graduation requirements. Diploma eligibility is based on completing the required academic work, not simply on whether a student was full-time or part-time every year.
Will my child be able to apply to college with a Wiser Academy diploma?
However, college admission is not the ultimate focus or final purpose of Wiser Academy. Our goal is to give students a serious education that prepares them for life, family, citizenship, work, lifelong learning, and service to God.
Wiser Academy does not currently offer AP courses, dual enrollment, ACT preparation, or SAT preparation.
What kind of student is a good fit for Wiser Academy?
Students do not need to be advanced before joining. They do need to be willing to read, think, write, study, ask questions, and improve.
Wiser Academy is not a good fit for students who are not interested in learning or who simply want an easy program to breeze through. The academy is designed for students who are willing to grow in knowledge, discipline, responsibility, and character.
What if my child is behind academically?
If a student needs additional support, families may choose a slower academic plan, tutoring, or extra time in foundational subjects. Wiser Academy can offer consultations to help families think through the best path forward.
Wiser Academy does not currently provide placement testing. Parents who want formal testing may arrange that separately through outside providers.
What if my child is advanced?
Because Wiser Academy does not rely strictly on age-based grade levels, students may be able to move into more challenging coursework when they are ready. Advanced students can pursue deeper reading, more difficult writing, higher-level thinking, and a more demanding academic path.
Does Wiser Academy serve students with special needs?
We will not refuse enrollment simply because a student has special needs. However, parents should understand that Wiser Academy does not currently provide specialized special education services, individualized education programs, therapeutic support, or staff trained to meet every learning disability or accommodation need.
Parents of students with special needs should carefully consider whether Wiser Academy’s structure, expectations, and available support are a good fit for their child.
Does Wiser Academy offer live classes?
Live classes may be added in the future if there is enough parent interest. For now, families should enroll with the understanding that the main structure of the academy is online coursework, supported by study materials, assignments, assessments, and tutoring options.
Is tutoring included?
Some plans do not include tutoring. Other plans include regular weekly one-on-one tutoring. The Mentor Plan includes one day of weekly one-on-one tutoring for one hour.
Families may also schedule additional tutoring when needed.
How much does tutoring cost?
Tutoring is charged when the student chooses and schedules a tutoring time through Calendly.
How do parents know what courses their child should take?
Wiser Academy is developing academic planning tools to help families understand what courses students should take and how those courses fit into a long-term academic path.
The Graduation Map helps students and parents plan courses, track progress, understand requirements, and see how a student’s work fits into the larger goal of graduation.
Families may also receive guidance depending on their enrollment plan.
Can adults enroll in Wiser Academy courses?
Adult learners may use Wiser Academy to strengthen their education, study classical subjects, review important academic foundations, or continue learning in areas such as history, literature, philosophy, logic, theology, economics, civics, and more.
Does Wiser Academy require students to follow a set schedule?
Some students may work best with a daily schedule created by their parents. Others may follow a weekly course plan. The important thing is that students make steady progress and treat their education seriously
